During the first half of the 1980s, one of the most popular groups on the London scene was
The Sex Gang Children, formed in 1982 by vocalist Andreas and his longtime friend Dave
Roberts, a bass player with the. approach of a lead guitarist. The group played its very first
gig under the name Panic Button before deciding to become The Sex Gang Children, as
which they made their first public appearance at Gossip's in January, 1982, with a line-up
completed by Terry MacLeay (guitar) and Rob Stroud (drums).
It will probably come as no surprise to learn that the group found it less than
straightforward to acquire bookings, although this had everything to do with their name and
virtually nothing to do with tneir music-Andi Sexgang (as he is known) was a Marc Bolan
admirer, while a major influence for Dave Roberts was Joy Division, and while both
maintain that their group's music can hardly be categorised as simply as a collision between
T. Rex and Peter Hook, in simple terms this was its roots.
The shortage of gigs was corrected when the band were recommended to Keith Bagley of
the independent Illuminated Records, who made the band his first major signing, and by a
hugely successful appearance at the 1982 Futurama Festival in Leeds, which was their initial
breakthrough. Futurama coincided with the release of the first record by Sex Gang
Children, a 12" EP titled 'Beasts', which included Times Of Our Lives', 'Cannibal Queen'
and 'Sense Of Elation', as well as the title track. Produced by Nicky Garrett of The UK
Subs, it topped the independent singles chart without penetrating the Radio One Top 75 the
record remained in the independent listings for longer than any other single of the time
bar Bauhaus' 'Bela Lugosi's Dead' and Joy Division's 'Love Will Tear Us Apart'.
Soon after the EP was released, the group headlined a 31 date UK tour, and six weeks
later, headlined another 15 date tour in larger venues, while -perhaps unwisely -they
turned down the chance to open for Killing Joke and Bauhaus on even bigger tours. In the
context of which, Andi declares that the group would never have agreed to pay for the
'privilege' of opening for another act, apart from which they were always headliners
anyway. During this period, they managed themselves, and in 1991 admit that this was a
mistake (although Roberts regards it as an important learning period). Since they sold out
London's celebrated Lyceum Ballroom several times during 1983, they possibly needed a
manager less than many other bands ...
At the end of 1982, a follow-up single, 'Into The Abyss', was released, which was
produced by Tony James, previously founder of Generation X with Billy Idol, and
subsequently the founder of Sigue Sigue Sputnik. This just failed to top the indie charts, not
surprisingly failing to outsell Yazoo's 'The Other Side Of Love', with Vince Clarke and
Alison Moyet, but again enjoyed a long chart life. January 1983 saw the release of 'Song &
Legend', their first album, which was again produced by Tony James, and which again
topped the independent chart and reached the Top 50 of the MRIB charts. It included the
single 'Sebastiane', which was the group's most popular 7", and was also released six months
later as a 12" single. On the day the album was released, which was also the day a major tour
was starting, Rob Stroud rather inconveniently left the band. He was eventually replaced by
Nigel Preston (ex-Theatre Of Hate), who drummed on 'Mauritia Mayer' and 'Children's
Prayer'. Later that year, around the time 'Mauritia Mayer' was released, The Sex Gang
Children were offered a record deal with a multi-national if they would abbreviate their
name to Sex Gang. They refused for various reasons.
Nigel Preston left the group to join The Cult shortly before The Sex Gang Children's first
US tour in 1983, and was -somewhat incestuously -replaced by original Cult drummer Ray
Mondo, while Dave Roberts was also invited to join The Cult at the same time, but turned
the offer down, The US tour was a 31 date swing, with gigs at prestige venues of between 600
and 3,000 capacity, including two in New York (at the Peppermint Lounge and the
Danceteria). Dave Roberts also conceived a compilation album, 'The Whip', as a solo
project, which he also placed with a label-this project gave Andi a platform to record 'The
Hungry Years' with Marc Almond, and the group were well represented on the album, with
Dave (as Dave Sexgang) also contributing solo work. In 1984, "Deiche" (remixed by Simon
Boswell) was released, with a re-recording of "Draconian Dream" (MK2) on the B side,
featuring Cam Campbell (Bass) and Kevin Matthews (Drums). At this point the band
embarked on solo projects.
Dave Roberts formed Carcrash International, a band which made 3 x 12 released by the
Belgian Crammed Discs label, the last of which was released by the French label, Invitation
Au Suicide. After that, he worked with Christian Death, playing on the latter's live album,
before assembling The Children.
Andi made two solo albums, 'Blind' and 'Arco Valley', and also wrote the music for
'Phenomena' (whose title in the UK and US was 'Creepers'), a film starring Donald
Pleasance. Others who contributed to the soundtrack included Motorhead, Iron Maiden
and Bill Wyman. Andi released a 12" EP as 'Dirty Roseanne' and shortly afterwards met
Mick Ronson who produced and played on 'Arco Valley'.
This compilation is being released for the first time on CD as a reminder of how the group
sounded first time round. Every track they cut for rIluminated is included, as well as the two
they recorded for Clay Records. Finishing touches are being put to a new studio album.
