Симин Тандер (род. 19 октября 1980 г., Кёльн, Северный Рейн-Вестфалия, Германия) – джазовая певица немецко-афганского происхождения, пианистка и композитор. Она – дочь учительницы немецкого языка, с одной стороны, и афганского журналиста и поэта – с другой. Симин выросла в Кёльне, как и ее старшая сестра Мина Тандер[1], которая стала известной актрисой. Сначала Симин Тандер обучалась классическому вокалу у оперной певицы, но вскоре поняла, что ей больше нравится вокальная импровизация. В юности она также посещала уроки игры на фортепиано и даже основала собственную группу ‘Simin’. В 2002 году певица поступила на джазовое вокальное отделение в нидерландскую консерваторию Conservatory ArtEZ, по окончании которой в 2008 году получила степень магистра музыки. А в октябре 2020 года на лейбле Jazzhaus Records увидел свет сольный альбом Симин Тандер Unfading, в записи которого приняли участие шведский бас-гитарист Бьорн Мейер, швейцарский перкуссионист Самуэль Рорер и тунисский виртуоз виолы д’амур Ясир Хадж Юсеф[3]. На альбоме тексты поэтесс на языке пушту (один из восточно-иранских языков, который является официальным языком Афганистана) сочетаются с поэзией американской богини «исповедальной поэзии» Сильвии Плат, а также с собственными сочинениями Симин Тандер.

Simin Tander
Simin Tander (born 19 October 1980 in Cologne, Germany) is a German jazz musician (vocals and piano) and composer.
Tander is the daughter of an Afghan journalist father, who died when she was a child, and a German teacher mother. She was raised in Cologne and her older sister Mina Tander became an actress. As Tander finished high school, she was very close to get a board contract as pop singer. During her vocal training with an opera singer, she realized that she was more into vocal improvisation than the Classical singing. She attended piano lessons and founded her own band. From 2002, she studied jazz singing at the Conservatory ArtEZ in the Netherlands. There she graduated with a Master of Music in 2008. In the following years she played in the Netherlands with trumpeter Eric Vloeimans and with Bo van de Graaf's I Compani, where she made contributions for the albums Fellini (2004), Garbo and Extended 2013. In Germany she can be heard on soundtracks of the Tatort series and two episodes of the ZDF film Der Kriminalist.
She led her own Quartet to contributions on the Jeroen van Vliet (winners of the 2014 Boy-Edgar-Preis), Etienne Nillesen and Cord Heineking. With her Quartet she has released two albums and performed on international stages, such as the North Sea Jazz Festival, the Bohemia Jazz Festival (Czechia), the Catania Jazz Festival (Italy), the Madrid International Jazz Festival (Spain), the OCT LOFT Festival (China), the Hong Kong Jazz Festival and the Jarasum Jazzfestival (South Korea). Simin was also invited several times from UN Women Committee to represent Germany for international events and in June 2015 interpreted the UN Women-Song One Woman during the 20'th Beijing Conference.
She has collaborated with the Norwegian pianist Tord Gustavsen and drummer Jarle Vespestad since 2014, releasing the album What Was Said (2016). They performed at the 2016 Vossajazz in Norway. In addition, she contributes regularly to other projects, such as in 2015 to the TFF Rudolstadt with the 'Ruth ausgezeichnete Ensemble' Eurasians Unity under the direction of Caroline Thon, or Heiner Schmitz' Sins & Blessings. Since 2012, she has been a lecturer in jazz singing at Institut f ür Musik Osnabr ück. She lives in Cologne.

Following her superb album “Where Water Travels Home” (2014) and the internationally acclaimed, extraordinary collaboration with Norwegian star pianist Tord Gustavsen for the ECM label (“What Was Said”, 2016), German-Afghan singer Simin Tander opens a new door on her artistic journey, and beyond it she discovers unusual soundscapes: with her expressive voice and a freshly formed quartet, she sets out on an adventure of multifaceted connections with her new album „Unfading“. In it she interweaves the flow of actual songs and the power of timelessly beautiful melodies full of emotion with echoes of the archaic past and passages of improvised freedom.
And this always from a very female perspective: texts from poetesses in the Pashto language and the metamorphosis of an Afghan hit from the 1960s are juxtaposed with the poetry of Sylvia Plath, Tander’s own compositions in a beguilingly secretive narrative tone and a classical Spanish lullaby; an intertwined dramatic arc stretching across centuries connecting different creative women – with mature, evocative vocal power. 

Simin Tander has united three exceptional musicians in an entirely untypical ensemble in order to take this courageous step. Bass player Bj örn Meyer (ECM recording artist) from Sweden and Samuel Rohrer (ECM recording artist) from Switzerland on percussion create the imaginative, rhythmic framework – in an interplay of driving, pulsating, almost funky riffs and impressive, loose textures. The Tunisian musician Jasser Haj Youssef playing the viola d’amore acts as a subtle counterpart to Tander’s voice: the deep, delicately warm sound of this unique baroque instrument conjures up rich overtone landscapes and plays a leading role.
The result is a celestial texture that seems to speak the unspeakable, yet time and again abandons itself to the tangible gestures of the song-writing. Simin Tander’s new project represents her fearless immersion into fascinating, uncharted music territory – a land of the timeless, immortal language of the soul.
