Доп. информация
The carefully selected works on these four compact discs issued by ASV offer us an opportunity to examine a number of Boyce’s vocal compositions for the first time. The pair of Cecilian odes were composed for the annual celebration each November for the patron saint of music. Boyce’s setting of The Secular Masque—with its text by John Dryden—was first heard at Cambridge in 1749. There is no plot here, only various gods and goddesses discussing what they view as a decline in moral values. Pindar’s Ode was written in 1740 for one of London’s first musical societies, the Apollo Academy. Boyce also composed the shorter of his two Cecilian odes for the Academy, and the oratorio David’s Lamentations over Saul and Jonathan, the latter based on the biblical book of Samuel II. Finally, Ode for the New Year (1774) is self-explanatory, being one of the numerous such works quilled by Boyce for the royal court while he was Master of the King’s Musick. As for the overtures, they have their roots in other dramatic works of Boyce. To dissect each of these compositions would eat up a great deal of space and no doubt would also incur the wrath of my editor’s red pen so I will be as brief as possible. When these discs were released a decade ago, the musical press found much praise from all concerned. Roderick Swanson wrote, “This is superb, infectious music magnificently performed. The New College Choir is on cracking form, as is the Hanover Band. Graham Lea-Cox directs with fire and precision”. Peter Branscombe observed, “Not only is the music enchanting, the performances are full of subtlety and eloquence as well as enthusiasm and spirit. Graham Lea-Cox, who is responsible for the editions used, directs the performances with great skill and discernment; he is equally successful with the wistful and the vigorous numbers, bringing an almost theatrical flair to the argument of the Masque, pomp to the ceremonial music and grace to the dance numbers.” As for me, I am quite impressed as well. Graham Lea-Cox has done an amazing job here. The Hanover Band is alert and spirited, their period strings sing with a nice, silvery tone and the old oboes add their pungent sound to the mix, all in an effort to capture the ethos of Boyce’s scores. The knowledgeable soloists perform in an outstanding manner as well, with appropriate and never over-the-top ornamentation. The boy trebles are quite impressive and basses David Thomas and Michael George have never sounded better! All in all, Graham Lea-Cox has given us a perfect wedding of incredible ease and abounding beauty. These recordings have been out of circulation for a while, but their recent re-emergence and unerring leadership has garnered these four CDs a spot in Fanfare’s Classical Hall of Fame. Michael Carter
