Об исполнителе (группе)
The National — американская инди-рок группа, сформированная в Нью-Йорке музыкантами из Цинциннати, штат Огайо. Ради участия в проекте будущим музыкантам пришлось бросить работу. Первый самостоятельный альбом The National был выпущен под лейблом Brassland Records, принадлежащем братьям Десснерам и Алеку Беймсу. Музыканты дали несколько концертов в поддержку готовящегося альбома. Он стал началом их карьеры; за ним последовал второй альбом Sad Songs for Dirty Lovers.
В 2005 группа стала записываться под новым лейблом — Beggars Banquet Records. Альбом Alligator, записанный под новым лейблом, получил восторженные отзывы критиков и был назван «Альбомом года» многими авторитетными музыкальными изданиями. 22 мая 2007 года появился новый — такой же успешный, как и предыдущий — альбом Boxer, в записи которого принимали участие приглашённые музыканты. 10 мая 2010 года состоялся выпуск нового альбома High Violet, в очередной раз получившего самые лестные отзывы критиков и ставшего коммерчески наиболее успешным альбомом группы.

- Группа испытала на себе сильное влияние творчества таких знаменитых музыкальных коллективов, как, например, U2. Joy Division и The Cure
- В группе играют две пары братьев — Аарон и Брюс Десснеры, а также Скотт и Брайан Девендрофы. Отличительной чертой музыки является — наряду с тонкими лиричными текстами песен — глубокий баритон вокалиста Мэтта Берингера.
- Падма Ньюсом из родственной группы Clogs иногда выступает вместе с The National, играя на клавишных, и иногда делает аранжировки для песен.
