Reviews
Considering what we read somewhere in the package notes, this recording is a "smertzenfrei art transplantation". Don't ask what does this means – you'll understand when listening to the CD, but will always be uncapable to put it into words. The only thing you'll be able to argument is the consideration that this "transplantation" has more to do with vital organs than skin: it's deep and essential, not a cosmetic manipulation of apparencies. Involved are Atle Nymo, Havard Wiik, Ole Morten Vagan and Hakon Mjaset Johansen, some of the most notable improvisers in the Norwish scene, and a very special guest, German trumpet innovator Axel Dorner. The music inside is the kind you can expect from a Motif release: a mind-blowing post-bop journey with a Charles Mingus flavor, incorporating some avant-garde vocabularies and techniques, from free jazz to contemporary classical, and rhythm patterns from rock (there's a Frank Zappa influence all around, also present in the humouristic side of this proposal) and electronica (Squarepusher? Aphex Twin?). Every track results in a surprise, and a true gem. "Art Transplant" is a strong candidate for the 2011 best albums list, and surely you don't want to miss it. ~ Clean FeedThis Scandinavian quartet featuring eminent German trumpeter and cunning improviser Axel Dörner strikes a golden chord via a diverse outlook, containing ferocious free-bop jaunts, vivid expressionism, and a treasure trove of guileful deviations.
Dorner’s throaty air current manipulations offer a bizarre and unassuming launch to the proceedings on the first piece, ”Prologue: Dornotomie.” However, the entire album parlays an evolutionary sequence of processes. With ongoing theme constructions and briskly articulated free flights, the band effortlessly aligns a regimented structural component with loosely based improvisational parts. They also engage in quite a few reengineering escapades, topped off with the soloists’ vibrant interactions and effective use of space.
It’s a mesmeric yet cogent journey, projecting a thrills a minute vibe. Whether the soloists’ pursue gruff, bump and grind movements or alternate between tricky time signatures and temperate moments, the program equates to a moveable feast for the mind’s eye. And with “Krakatau,” the quintet surges with a linear sound design, shaded with emotive subtleties and energized by way of spiraling choruses, accelerated by Atle Nymo’s garrulous sax solo atop a swaggering pulse. In effect, the band bolsters a consortium of ominous propositions, abetted by a rolling wave of expansive dialogues. In sum, “Art Transplant” is a top pick for 2011. These folks pull out the proverbial stops while revealing a mark of authenticity to the overall dynamic. ~ Glenn AstaritaMotif is a Nowegian band with Atle Nymo on tenor, Håvard Wiik on piano, Ole Morten Vågan on double bass, and Håkon Mjåset Johansen on drums. They are joined for the occasion by German trumpeter Axel Dörner. All five musicians form the traditional bop quintet, and that's how they sound. With music that is composed, fully arranged and structured .... but with a twist. They are indeed the masters of deconstruction and reconstruction, abandoning their themes for wild or fun or experimental explorations, yet always falling back on the composed backbone of the piece.
This kind of explains the "Art Transplant" in the title, elements are taken out and replaced by different stuff, invented on the spot and integrated in the old structure. Critics could say that this is a nice trick to keep jazz artificially alive, yet the contrary is true : the band demonstrates how much of the jazz tradition is still of use today, and what a rich treasure trove it is for today's language of expression. The music is also fun to listen to with lots of playful elements. The playing and the stylistic shifts are really exceptional, yet they at times seem to overshadow the emotional power needed to make this a truly great album.
In contrast to "Facienda", the band's triple CD of live and sturio recordings released earlier this year, "Art Transplant" is much more coherent in its approach.
A strong stylistic achievement. ~ freejazz-stef.blogspot
