Notes
A sampler of late 1980s rock that was originally released in the USSR as Breakthrough. It supposedly sold 500,000 copies in the USSR on the day of it's release. Eventually USSR sales reached 3 million copies.
Subsequently released world-wide on a variety of labels. According to Greenpeace world-wide sales had raised more than 8 million dollars by 1998.
Profits from the sale of the album have been used to fund Greenpeace campaigns and infrastructure.
All the artists involved donated their music to Greenpeace.
The phrase Rainbow Warriors comes from a native American myth. The Warriors Of The Rainbow will emerge to save the planet when it is sick and the animals are dying.
In 1989 31 bands donated songs to a fundraiser compilation for international activists Greenpeace. Originally available on vinyl, the CD set includes four bonus tracks. The music is a diverse sample of 1980s rock originally released in the U.S.S.R. as Breakthrough, where it sold 500,000 copies on the day of its release. Eventually U.S.S.R. sales exceeded three million. This adventurous fundraiser was later released worldwide, including North America, Ireland, Italy, Scandinavia, New Zealand, India, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, Poland, Yugoslavia, and Japan. According to Greenpeace, worldwide sales had raised more than eight million dollars for Greenpeace initiatives. Highlights of the set include a live version of "Pride (In the Name of Love)" by U2, and hits by the Pretenders, World Party, R.E.M., Sting, the Grateful Dead, Thompson Twins, Peter Gabriel, and Dire Straits. This CD is a good document of rock & roll in 1989 and benefits a good cause.
