ревью LP#1 c Ugly Things
British Psychedelic Trip #1 I don't know about you, but I'm getting a little weary of the skads of American 60s punk compilations. It seems that "Pebbles" has reached the hundreds (I know they haven't, it just SEEMS that way) and more and more people are putting out their own albums made up from their "Goldmine" bought record collection. Don't get me wrong, I like most of the stuff, but let's face it, we're all familiar with that type of thing. Ain't it about time to move on to new, more daring regions? YES! Luckily See For Miles Records out of England has heeded the call and unleashed some of the most sought after 45s from the era when British music reached its peak, 1966-69 (?! - M.S.). The guys at See For Miles have collected some of the best tracks from Decca's subsidiary label Deram and put them together on one album, along with some fine liner notes and a great cover. Decca, it seems, after turning down the Beatles and realizing what a mistake they had made, started signing any group they could get their hands on. Since the Rolling Stones were about all the weirdness staid Decca could handle, the company set up the Deram label in September of 1965 as an outlet for experimentation and general way-out-ness. As this record shows, boy did they get it! As soon as the stereo needle hits the opening track you know you're not gonna be bored with some band rehashing "Gloria." A band called Turquoise starts you off with their King-like "Tales Of Flossie Fillet," a fine song that sort of sounds like "Autumn Almanac" in a way. Well, whaddaya expect? They WERE from Muswell Hill and they WERE friends with Ray Davies. Other standouts on Side One include "The Muffin Man" by the World Of Oz; "In Your Tower," the Poets' last single (and just as fine as their others) and "Baked Jam Roll In Your Eye," an amazing song by Timebox about Martians taking over Earth with jam roll guns and lyrics like "Are you trying to kill or feed me?" - excellent pop/beat with just a touch of surrealism. My fave track on Side One though has to be "Created By Clive" by the Attack. If there was ever a band who deserved stardom it was these guys. They came close when they recorded "Hi Ho Silver Lining," but Jeff Beck recorded it after them and nabbed the hit (needless to say, they were not pleased with Mr. Beck). The song featured here deals with a girl who was once plain but great, who is now a fashion model but has a hard time breathing because her nose is so high in the air! A classic song, it can hold its head up high with other Attack classics such as "Neville Thumbcatch" and "Anymore Than I Do." Now, normally you would expect that since Side One is so crushing, Side Two must have at least a couple of bum tracks. Not true! Just like Side One, Side Two plays crush grooves straight through! I'm just gonna mention a few of my faves, `cause all the tracks are great. All the faves that make you scream "The weekend starts here!!" can be found. You get the crunching sounds of the Accent with "Red Sky At Night"; the Flies with the best-ever version of "Stepping Stone" and the mad mod pop sound of the Fire's pilled up "Father's Name Is Dad." Then there's demented punk with the Cryin' Shames' "Come On Back," balanced by the haunting sounds of Tintern Abbey with both sides of their classic single, "Vacuum Cleaner" and "Bee-side." Plus there's my personal fave, "Romeo & Juliet 1968" by Toby Twirl. This song has already been raved about in these pages, so that should tell you something. It kills! Well, that's about it. Yes, you're right, I am kind of enthusiastic about this record, but I know it's gonna take a lot of enthusiasm (plus a shotgun) to make some people realize that music didn't stop being great in 1966. In fact, it got better for the most part, at least with the UK bands. I should know, right? I'm writing this review, and you're just reading it. - John Hanrattie (Originally published in Ugly Things #6, 1987)
