In 1993 a videogame franchise was unleashed that would turn into a multimillion dollar phenomenon. Doom has, unsurprisingly, made the leap from video screen to cinema screen and the result seems to be a ballsy, hard-edged, testosterone infused affair with a similarly styled score from Clint Mansell.
The album, from Varèse Sarabande, is a generous sixty minutes and takes no prisoners throughout its twenty-two tracks. The score can best be described as Techno-infused Rock with a spattering of sampled orchestral moments - definitely not for the faint-hearted!
The opening lulls us into a rather false sense of security with its calm electronic twinkling and meandering strings, but from track two (the title track, ‘Doom’) our senses are assaulted with a barrage of drums and guitars. This style of music is inherent in many of the tracks, notably ‘BFG!’ and ‘Destroyed’, which are actually really well paced with some great percussion.
‘Taking Control’, has an effective build to it; beginning with a flurry of string-like sounds and moving into a simple bass string motif, which is the only recurring motif in the score that I can identify, later joined by pounding drums – quite exciting.
Mansell adds a lot of sound effects into this mix, making for an often intriguing and eerie listen. ‘Resurrection’ is a good example of this as it mixes choir samples with what can only be described as a chainsaw sound effect, before ending with ghostly voices and wailing strings that descend downscale.
The final track is a ‘Clint Mansell Remix’ of a song, ‘You Know What You Are? ,’ performed by Nine Inch Nails.
Doom spelled backwards is of course ‘Mood’ and that is exactly what this score has; it’s unapologetically riotous and is completely in sync with the style and genre of the film it’s written for and, as such, is very effective. If you’re hoping for something in the vain of Mansell’s last action score, Sahara, then you will be rather disappointed, as this is a completely different animal.
