You may have guessed that the first volume of "Ugly Things" (RVLP o2) was one of my all-tyme fave compilations. A rich sampling of crazed Antipodean cacophony, including the utterly classick "Ugly Thing" by the Creatures. It's been a long wait, but Volume Two of "Ugly Things" is finally here.
Despite the presence of less manic garage sounds and fewer leering dementoids, like the unreal Missing Links, this volume is still very worthwhile, concentrating more on wyld beat cuts from such groups as the Bluebeats and the Five. There are a few weaker tracks, as with Volume One, but with ten tracks per side who can really complain? Especially when you can hear cool stuff like "Raining Teardrops" by the Barrington Davis Powerpact, and the first fabulous La De Das single, "Little Girl." There's also a couple of return appearance from some fave Volume One bands. Firstly, the Sunsets, who provided the soundtracks for a couple of Aussie surf flicks, included here is the title track of "The Hot Generation" - real boss! As is "It's A Hard Life" by the Atlantics, whose "Come On" was a high point of Volume One.
Glenn Baker must be thoroughly commended as the man more or less solely responsible for the reappearance of material by these, and many other, lost and great groups of Australia's (and New Zealand's) fine sixties heritage.
All in all not as downright ugly as its predecessor, but plenty of raving beat sound to be dug. Ugh.

The tacky front cover art is non too inspiring, and there's a lot of repeat tracks from other reissues included (the Easybeats' "For My Woman," the La De Das' "How Is The Air Up There," the Blue Stars' "Social End Product," to name just a few) but some fabulous unknown selections and a passel of unreleased gems (well, four of `em) more than make up for these initial misgivings.
A definite standout here is the Showmen's scolding "Naughty Girl," a snotty little raver with some spindly guitar picking and exciting harp punctuations.
The amazing Pleazers are represented by "Hurtin' All Over," a torrid beat number with a dangerous-sounding fuzz guitar buzzing its way through it.
There's more goodies too from the Twilights, the Lost Souls and the masterful Bobby James Syndicate. Indeed, there's very little here that will disappoint any fan of `60s beat/punk sounds.
In the previously unreleased department, there's two bands featuring original Masters Apprentices guitar god Rick Morrison. The Others' "Why Can't She Be Mine?" is an angst filled Diddley-inspired ditty, while Machine Gun Kelly's Rejects take aim with a sputtering fuzz guitar riff and a simple but power-packed three chord progression; meanwhile, the singer delivers an over-the-top vocal right out of the Little Stevie Wright school of dementia. Great!
Stars of previous Raven releases, the Throb, turn in the great "One Thing To Do," while the previously unknown Modes are featured doing a raw version of "Baby Please Don't Go," recorded live at the finals of a 1966 Battle of the Bands.
Ironically, the only dead wood on the whole album is the opening cut: "Everlovin' Man" by the Loved Ones. Now I dig several of the cuts these guys put out (e.g. "Loved One," "Sad Dark Eyes") but lead screamer Gerry Humpheries was prone to overdoing it on the vocal theatrics, and on this particular number he definitely sounds like he has his testicles trapped in the jaws of a very large kangaroo.
This track aside, it's solidly top-notch Oz and New Zealand ravin' straight through. Here's hoping that a fourth volume isn't too far away.
